Cane and Grain Manchester

As it’s been a busy couple of weeks it’s a double post extravaganza this weekend. First to explore a new Northern Quarter opening. 50% off ribs and just ribs was just too much to refuse. With the gym firmly sacked off, we ventured down to the newest member of the Thomas st crew.

After some deliberation and toying with the idea of ordering something called the Meat Fest, we settled on just ordering a sizeable amount of the menu instead. With 4 dishes and 6 sides ordered between three we readied our bellies.

I started with a pretty good bourbon and strawberry cocktail decorated with pink peppercorns which was strong and unusual. It didn’t really taste of strawberry just mostly whisky, but then this is a place for whisky lovers.

Then the feast arrived and there were a LOT of ribs making much better use of the whisky for sauces.

We tried two kinds of pork ribs, the St Louis and the Memphis as well as an epic sized beef rib.

The ribs were all great in their own way, though my favourites were the St Louis which were smoky and sticky like all good ribs should be.

The sides were also very worthwhile, in fact ordered as bar snacks these could’ve been a great feast on their own. Hands down favourite for me was the truffle mac & cheese which didn’t skimp on the truffle. The chips were also a winner with the tasty ‘tiki’ salt. The beans were a bit of a letdown, just a bit over sour but the great mixed salad made up for it. And for extra good measure we’d also ordered chicken wings which were unabashedly yummy and sticky.

All in all, we went away in a bit of a meat coma, but satisfied. Pretty good for a new joint. Once my stomach recovers (which I’m awaiting any day now, a week later) I’ll be going for another visit.
