Mr Coopers House and Garden Manchester

MrCoopers

Manchester has been experiencing a change in the past few years. I’ve noticed it having gone to university here, moved away for a couple of years then moved back. It’s suddenly rapidly developing a thriving foodie scene and it’s starting to feel really exciting here.

Restaurants are opening very frequently now, food festivals are on every weekend all over the city and you can now (if you know where to go) find fantastic food from all over the world.

Mr Coopers is a bit of a marvel in this town, reasonably priced, super high quality fare and from a two Michelin starred chef no less. I took my family there for my mother’s birthday recently and we weren’t disappointed. I loved almost everything about the decor, the feeling you’re sat in a garden already started sending all the right messages about freshness and produce (minus one rather strange egg light).

Almost everything we ate was impeccable, I started with the meatballs with tzaziki which were predictably delicious, while my more adventurous boyfriend had the anise crusted sweetbreads. My first time trying them, and if they’re always that good certainly not my last.

The duck, however, oh the duck. It was probably one of the most delicious things possible to do with duck. The breast was perfectly cooked and there was a confit duck ball with it, which tasted somewhere between an explosion of duck fat goodness and one of those ‘almost wrong its so right’ deep fried chicken balls that came in a paper bag from the local Chinese. All the indulgence of a dirty takeaway but in a decadent, not too heavy, very well thought out dish.

For dessert, as more of a savoury person I always like to go with the more unusual choice for dessert so I tried the Turkish delight syllabub. Which contained the most light, fluffy, delicious Turkish delight I’ve ever tried (and I have very recently been to Turkey).

Overall, thoroughly impressed with Mr Coopers. Clean plates all round, a happy family (despite all being very fussy eaters). Will certainly be back soon.
